The fixed group of German prepositions that always take the dative — plus the everyday contractions (zum, zur, beim, vom) you'll hear constantly.
A fixed group of prepositions always takes the dative, whatever the sentence. Learn them as a sung list — aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu (plus gegenüber):
- aus — out of / from (aus der Schweiz)
- bei — at / near (bei dem Arzt)
- mit — with (mit dem Bus)
- nach — after / to (cities, countries) (nach Hause)
- seit — since / for (seit einem Jahr)

Common mistakes
