Goethe-Zertifikat A2 · Hören — format and strategy

What this part tests

A2 Hören keeps the A1 principle of listening for one fact at a time, but the speech around that fact is longer, less scripted, and no longer waits for you. The four parts each want something different. Two of them are five questions with three options, testing whether you can lift a single detail out of a stretch of talk. Another matches five recordings against a pool of nine options, so most of that pool exists to be turned down. The last is Richtig/Falsch: five statements to be judged against what you actually hear rather than against what merely sounds reasonable. Thirty minutes covers the module, and because the audio sets the pace instead of you, the decisive skill is reaching each question already knowing what you are listening for.

Strategy

Use every second before a recording begins to read the question and decide what shape its answer will have: a price, a weekday, a room number, a decision someone finally reaches. A question you have already understood turns the recording into confirmation instead of translation. Expect competing candidates on purpose — speakers name two times, two places, two preferences, and the first one you hear is very often the one a later sentence revises, so let the thought finish before you commit. In the nine-option matching part, resist filling every gap on the first pass: a decoy sounds convincing in isolation and loses its grip the moment a better home appears for it. For the Richtig/Falsch part, judge the whole statement rather than its keywords — if the recording confirms the place but contradicts the day, the statement is false, however familiar every word in it was. When you are torn, take the option you can trace back to something you genuinely heard rather than something you expected to hear, and leave no item undecided.

Worked example

Am Wochenende ___ wir nach Berlin gefahren.

  • haben
  • sind
  • waren
  • hatten

Imagine this sentence reaching you as speech in the Hören part. The words carrying the topic are the easy ones — Wochenende, Berlin, gefahren — and not one of them decides the item; the answer is a short unstressed word in the middle that is gone almost before you notice it. Fahren describes a change of place, and German builds the Perfekt of motion verbs with sein, so the form you are listening for is sind. Haben is simply the wrong auxiliary for this verb, while waren and hatten are Präteritum forms that cannot pair with gefahren at all. That is the characteristic A2 listening problem in miniature: the loud words give you the topic, the quiet ones give you the answer, so train your ear on the small function words that carry the grammar. The answer is sind.
